Bohus Knitting was a project that started in the 1930s to create job opportunities for women in the stone quarrying districts of Bohuslän. During this period the depression hit the area hard and resulted in high unemployment and hardship. A group of women from the north of Bohuslän sent a deputation to the governor´s wife Emma Jacobsson in Gothenburg, asking her to set up a homebased industry. In 1939 Bohus Knitting (sw Bohus Stickning) was started. Emma Jacobsson found who joy in encouraging the project of improving and developing home crafts and was the driving force behind this initiative. Out in the countryside Bohus Knitting had important social implications through the knitting-courses that were organised. From its origins as necessity work, Bohus Knitting expanded into the production of exclusive handicraft.

In the late 1990s, Bohusläns Museum produced a collection of Bohus Knitting garments in collaboration with textile designer Solveig Gustafsson for a retropesctive exhibition. Over the next fifteen years, Solveig Gustafsson continued to recreate some seventy Bohus Knitting patterns.
